Erectile dysfunction:
Caution with medications
There are a whole lot of drugs which can cause ED
It’s a dicey business of sorts. While you may
think that your problem of Erectile Dysfunction is to
do with your age or general disinterest in Sexual
Intercourse, this could well be a medicine you are
taking to treat some other problem of yours. There is
a long list of medicines which have been found to affect
men’s sexual health. However, what affects erection
in one may not cause the same in another.
So if you feel that a medicine is affecting your Sexual
Health, do not stop it just there and then. Talk
to a doctor. But then it is good to be knowledgeable
enough on what all have been known to cause ED.
Antihypertensive and diuretic medications like the
following have been listed by several information outlets
as possible cause of ED - Atenolol (Tenormin), Bethanidine,
Chlorothiazide (Diuril), Chlorthalidone (Hygroton),
Clonidine (Catapres), Enalapril (Vasotec), Guanabenz
(Wytensin), Verapamil (Calan), Metoprolol (Lopressor),
Hydralazine (Apresoline), Haloperidol (Haldol), Guanfacine
(Tenex), Hydrochlorothiazide (Esidrix), Guanethidine
(Ismelin), Labetalol (Normodyne), Methyldopa (Aldomet),
Prazosin (Minipress), Reserpine (Serpasil), Minoxidil
(Loniten), Phenoxybenzamine (Dibenzyline), Spironolactone
(Aldactone), Triamterene (Maxide), Phentolamine (Regitine),
Propranolol (Inderal), etc.
Thiazides among the medicines used to treat hypertention
are known to cause most commonly the Erectile
Dysfunction. Beta-blockers could be the second most
common.
Similarly antidepressants and medicines for psychiatry
problems too can cause ED. They go thus - Buspirone
(Buspar), Lorazepam (Ativan), Amitriptyline (Elavil),
Meprobamate (Equanil), Nortriptyline (Pamelor), Phenytoin
(Dilantin) and others used to treat depression and psychiatric
problems.
Medicines with anti-histamine formulations like Phenytoin
(Dilantin), Parkinson's disease medicines like Biperiden
(Akineton) and Bromocriptine (Parlodel), Chemotherapy
medicines and also recreational and analgesics too known
to men’s sexual health.
Short term usage of the medicines has been found to
be often reversible, but long-term usage has to go with
caution.
