Peyronies- A trouble to male sexual health
Peyronies- A trouble to male sexual health •
Peyronies is a health condition in men where they report
pain or bending of the penis during erection. This results
from inflammation and scarring in a particular area
of the penis.
• Francois de la Peyronie, a surgeon from France,
was the first one to describe a treatment for this disorder.
This was in year 1743.
• The condition is most commonly seen at around
the age of 55. It is also possible that a man is born
with curvature of the penis, though this is not termed
as Peyronies disease.
• Peyronies is a very uncommon condition and
the ratio in which it is seen is only three men among
a hundred.
• In addition to producing curvature, the disease
may also change the shape of the erection in other ways
like indentation, diameter reduction, or loss of length.
• The severity of this condition varies from
individual to individual. It is only a minority of men
afflicted with this problem who are unable to engage
sexually. Though it does cause an effect on the erection
mechanism, i.e. reduces rigidity, but it very rarely
causes impotence.
• The condition may not bring much of physical
trouble but it definitely has a strong psychological
impact.
• Some cases are mild and heal without treatment
within a year of onset. However, most cases produce
at least some degree of persistant curvature.
• A noticeable lump within the penis is commonly
seen. Contrary to anxieties, it is not cancerous, and
unrelated to cholesterol – containing arterial
plaque.
• Peyronies disease
may run in families, though most cases do not appear
to be hereditary.
• The goal of treatment is to maintain sexual
health. In some cases, education about the disease and
reassurance is all that is required. It is very rare
that surgery is recommended. Surgery is suggested only
when there is long-term deformity and there is problem
in sexual intercourse.
