Impotence
heightens risk of heart disease
January 04, 2006
Men suffering with impotence
have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular
problems than those who have normal sexual
function, according to a study. Impotence
is linked to a 27 percent higher risk of heart-
related events such as angina, heart attack
or stroke within seven years. The link is similar
to those found with high cholesterol, cigarette
smoking or a family history of heart attacks.
The study is the first to
show a strong association between erectile dysfunction
and heart disease, researchers said. The findings
suggest doctors should evaluate the cardiovascular
health of men who seek impotence drugs,
such as Viagra,
Cialis or Levitra according to lead researcher
Ian Thompson. Because erectile function is a
vascular process, it's not surprising you might
see a problem with blood-vessel health earlier
with sexual function than with the heart.
