Pharmacists Sold Fake Impotence Drugs
June 17, 2004
Police on Thursday requested
arrest warrants for seven pharmacists who bought
and sold fake virility drugs, while 113 other
pharmacists were booked without physical detentions.
Two more people, identified as Kang and Choi,
were also booked without physical detention
on charges of supplying the bogus drugs to the
pharmacists.
According to police, Choi and Kang are suspected
of supplying 9,522 pills of Viagra
and Cialis, which were manufactured in China
and Russia, to the pharmacies in Seoul and Kyeonggi
provincial areas.
The illegally circulated drugs were worth 150
million won in market price.
They are suspected of smuggling the drugs through
peddlers who make frequent overseas trips, and
supplying them to pharmacies or directly selling
to customers at between 15,000 and 20,000 won
per pill.
The police explained that the pharmacists were
tempted to sell the fake drugs to customers
because they can be purchased at a cheaper price
and the drugs can be sold to customers without
a prescription.
``The real problem is that medically untested
and potentially harmful fake anti-impotence
pills, which used to be secretly sold in the
black market, are now circulated through the
pharmacies like legitimate drugs,’’
the police said.
