H.K.-U.S.
joint action foils fake drug smuggling plan
September 22, 2006
Hong Kong and U.S. customs authorities have
foiled a scheme to supply fake pharmaceutical
drugs worldwide through the Internet, the customs
department said Friday.
Hong Kong Customs, U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
jointly conducted an undercover operation that
has led to the arrest of one suspect in Hong
Kong and three others in the United States.
The suspect nabbed in Hong Kong was arrested Thursday
at a hotel where he met with undercover agents
to close a deal to supply 400,000 tablets of fake
drugs, including impotence pills Viagra
and Cialis.
"Some of the drugs have the ingredient
of the genuine drugs, some do not have any genuine
ingredient," Ben Leung, head of the Customs
Drug Investigation Bureau, told reporters.
The suspect arrested in Hong Kong will be extradited
to the United States, he said.
